Zamania

Zamania is a town and a municipal board in Ghazipur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Zamania, originated from the name of a Mughal Officer called 'Ali Quli Khan' alias Khan-e-Zaman as mentioned in the Ghazipur District Gazetteer. Zamania previously was known as 'Madan Banaras' and is still mentioned as Madan Banaras urf Zamania in current revenue records available at Zamania Tehsil. Madan Banaras also finds mention in Babur nama Volume - 2 (Page 658) translated from original Turki by Annette Susannah Beveridge and published by Atlantic Publishers and Distributors.

Madan Banaras in Akbar's sarkar of Ghazipur was renamed Zamania and is now the Headquarters of the Zamania pargana of district Ghazipur. The story that Zamania originated from Jamadagni Rishi (father of Parashurama Rishi) or that previously it was Jagdambania as claimed by some is not supported by any historical evidence.

Zamania town is located on the banks of river Ganges. It is divided into two main towns Zamania Qasba and Zamania Railway station which together form Zamania Nagar Palika (Municipality). Zamania is a railway station on the main railway route between New Delhi and Patna.

It is one of the most important towns of Ghazipur, being parted from Ghazipur City by river Ganga. It is not well connected to Ghazipur City which is district headquarters. It is only connected by a bridge called Abdul Hamid Setu with Ghazipur City. A new bridge is under construction near Zamania Kasba.

As of 2001 India census, Zamania had a population of 28,885. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Zamania has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 48%. In Zamania, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.
